ROCLA Delivers Humanitarian Aid to the Pastors for Peace Cuba Caravan

ROCHESTER, NY-- One week after the House of Representatives voted down four individual amendments to the Appropriations Bill, which would have relaxed travel and trade restrictions with Cuba, the people of Rochester and the Finger Lakes area demonstrated their opposition to the House vote.

ROCLA members collected, organized, packed and delivered much-needed medical aid to the Pastors for Peace Cuba Caravan Friendshipment, which will take it on to US-Mexican border, and on to Cuba (assuming the US border guards let it pass).

Included in the shipment were four specially equipped quadriplegic wheelchairs, a number of walkers, two lifts for manipulating patients, and a special tub for geriatric care and physical therapy. Contributions came from various private sources and hospitals in the Finger Lakes area.

The US Embargo against Cuba has done very little to achieve its stated objectives, but it has done a great deal to hurt the innocent people of Cuba. And because

of this, we feel that it is our responsibility to let the Cuban people know that our government does not conduct this policy of aggression in our name.

We believe it is immoral to withhold food and medicine as a weapon. The definition of terrorism is the commitment of acts of violence against innocent civilians for political gain, and by that definition, the US Embargo is an act of terrorism.

If our government will not correct this wrong, it is up to us to at least compensate for it. Today, we did what we could with the help of our neighbors. Through their generosity, we can show the people of Cuba and the world that we understand the real meaning of the Culture of Life. We know that true humanitarian aid has no strings attached, and that it is a basic human right to have access to food and medical supplies.
